What Is Self Direction?
Self-Directed Services are designed to empower individuals with developmental disabilities by providing greater choice, flexibility, and control over the supports they receive. This person-centered approach allows services to be tailored to each individual's unique goals, interests, preferences, and daily needs.
Through Self-Direction, individuals have the opportunity to decide how their services are delivered, where they are provided, and who provides them. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all model, Self-Direction encourages the development of a customized support plan that reflects each person's vision for living a meaningful and independent life.
Participants in Self-Direction share responsibility for managing their supports and services to the extent they choose. The level of responsibility depends on the amount of authority the individual wishes to exercise. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) defines this decision-making role as "authority," which refers to the level of control a person has over directing their own services.
Two forms of Self-Direction authority are available: Employer Authority and Budget Authority. Individuals may choose to exercise one or both types of authority based on their personal preferences, goals, and desired level of involvement. This flexible approach allows each person to receive supports in a way that best promotes independence, dignity, and an enhanced quality of life.
